6 years agoWhen it comes to the specific father-daughter relationship, Dad’s involvement is uniquely influential. "Fathers have an incalculable impact on their daughters," writes Dr. James Dobson in the Complete Marriage and Family Home Reference Guide. "Most psychologists believe, and I am one of them, that all future romantic relationships to occur in a girl's life will be influenced positively or negatively by the way she perceives and interacts with her dad. If he rejects and ignores her, she will spend her life trying to replace him in her heart. If he is warm and nurturing, she will look for a lover to equal him. If he thinks she is beautiful, worthy, and feminine, she will be inclined to see herself that way." Practically speaking, a father has the opportunity to demonstrate to his daughter how a godly man treats a woman, setting the standard for her future relationships with men. Gary Thomas, author of Sacred Parenting, says, "When my daughters were growing up, I tried . . . to set the bar as high as possible – I wanted to affirm them, encourage them and even spoil them a little, so that a guy would have to do the same to attract her as a potential mate. If a guy ever got rough with them, or put them down, they’d think, That’s not how healthy men treat women." Ultimately, Thomas says, a young woman’s relationship with her father has a significant impact on her view of men, her view of God and her view of herself. . . 💲💲 . . #UnguardableCrew #TheresAbsolutelyNothingYouCanDo . 2 months agoI’ll never forget the day I realized that I needed to make a change. I was in my fourth year as an attorney at Paul, Weiss. All of the external markers of “success” were there, but I had never felt so void. Deep down, I knew that I was further than I had ever been from my purpose and passion - the game of basketball. That same day, Nipsey Hussle’s song “Respect Ya Passion” came up on shuffle. In it, he says: “make a master plan, watch it backfire / burn it all down and collect the ashes / build it back / respect your passion” I knew it was time for me to “burn down” my career as a corporate lawyer, collect the ashes, and build my career in basketball. It was time for me to respect my passion. The last 5 years have been filled with high highs, low lows, and sacrifice after sacrifice, but I am so thankful for all parts of the journey that lead me to where I am today. I rarely post to the grid or give y’all these long captions, but I hope this message encourages someone who feels stuck and is questioning whether or not to follow their heart. Don’t let fear or doubt hold you back from chasing your dream. I’m living proof that you might just catch it. Thank you to @monumental_sports and the entire @washwizards organization for this opportunity. Let’s get it @capitalcitygogo !

3 years agoMy phone broke an hour before we left for our anniversary vacation, which served as a welcome reminder of the importance of finding time to disconnect from everything and everybody but Kayla. Five days in Puerto Vallarta and two hours in the Apple store later, here are some of my favorite moments from year one of marriage to my best friend 🖤

2 months agoOver the last few weeks and through Election Day, millions of Americans cast their votes – not just for president, but for leaders at every level. Now the results are in, and we want to congratulate President Trump and Senator Vance on their victory. This is obviously not the outcome we had hoped for, given our profound disagreements with the Republican ticket on a whole host of issues. But living in a democracy is about recognizing that our point of view won’t always win out, and being willing to accept the peaceful transfer of power. Michelle and I could not be prouder of Vice President Harris and Governor Walz – two extraordinary public servants who ran a remarkable campaign. And we will always be grateful to the staff and volunteers who poured their heart and soul into electing public servants they truly believed in. As I said on the campaign trail, America has been through a lot over the last few years – from a historic pandemic and price hikes resulting from the pandemic, to rapid change and the feeling a lot of folks have that, no matter how hard they work, treading water is the best they can do. Those conditions have created headwinds for democratic incumbents around the world, and last night showed that America is not immune. The good news is that these problems are solvable – but only if we listen to each other, and only if we abide by the core constitutional principles and democratic norms that made this country great. In a country as big and diverse as ours, we won’t always see eye-to-eye on everything. But progress requires us to extend good faith and grace – even to people with whom we deeply disagree. That’s how we’ve come this far, and it’s how we’ll keep building a country that is more fair and more just, more equal and more free.

2 months agoToday is the last day for us to #DoSomething to get @KamalaHarris elected! What a remarkable few months this has been — in record time, she’s built an extraordinary campaign, set forth a clear policy agenda, and proven again and again that she will be working not for herself, but for you. She’s done it all with intelligence, integrity, and grace. She has gone above and beyond. She’s more than done her part. Now it’s our turn. There’s a reason I’ve been working so hard this election cycle. It’s the same reason my husband, so many leaders of both parties, and so many of you have been out there as well — because we know the stakes are so high. We have so much to lose if we can’t get this done — and we have so much to gain if we do. We owe it to our children to reject the politics of division and fear and embrace a message of hope, and inclusion. Over the next few years, our kids will be the ones shouldering some of the most profound consequences of what we do — or don’t do — today. So let’s all do everything in our power over these last few hours. Vote like your lives depend on it. If there’s someone in your life you’ve been meaning to talk to, now is the time. Send your loved ones a text or give them a call to make sure they’ve voted. Head on down to the local campaign office and do one last volunteer shift. Time is running out for us to make an impact on this election — so if you’re feeling anxious or worried, get out there and #DoSomething!
