People always ask, ‘What’s the best part of what you do?’ For me, it’s simple—it’s being around the game I love and giving back to the community. As summer winds down, I’ve been reflecting on my athletes and how many of them have spent their time doing just that—giving back. My favorite way of giving back has always been through hosting youth camps.
I’ll never forget my first camp at the West Oakland Boys and Girls Club. I was around 9 or 10, and it was hosted by NBA player @kelenna7. I was nervous as hell, not just because it was my first time shooting in a real gym, but because an actual NBA player was there!
The camp ended up being one of the best experiences I’ve ever had, life changing actually. Even though I was too shy to go up and say hi, just sharing the gym with him, wearing the same shirt as he had on, and just being in his presence alone was enough.
I share this because I’m so proud of my guys for always giving back—whether it’s their time or resources. They’re creating moments that will stay with the kids forever.
Something I love is when we’re going through contract negotiations, and almost always an athletes first question is “I want to have a camp for kids back home, Can y’all help support that?”
Y’all know what the answer always is.
