Our political elites are currently the societal equivalent of the idiot teenager who thinks that it's fine to get into a car with his wasted friend and go race down the highway at 100mph, because his life trajectory is preordained to be good and bad stuff happens to other people.

I assure you that before every single disaster and atrocity that befell a relatively stable society in history there were many people who said "Things can't get bad. Only normal things happen, not truly bad things."
