4 months agoMπŸ€ head coach Clay Pottinger has made a big addition to his support staff for 2024-25 as Doug Plumb, a 3x championship-winning coach with the @londonlightning, will serve as a coaching consultant this upcoming season! Plumb brings a sparkling coaching and playing resume to the Heat. During his time with the Lightning, he won 81 percent of his games while coaching players such as Royce White, Xavier Moon, Carl English and Glen Davis. As a player, Plumb starred for both UFV and UBC, leading Canada West in scoring while with the Cascades and capturing a conference title with UBC while being named an All-Canadian. In his role with the Heat, Plumb will work as a strategic advisor to Coach Pottinger in a consultant role and will be helping with fundraising, alumni engagement and community relations. While in Kelowna, Plumb will also be working to grow and expand the reach of the Junior Heat program to increase opportunity for the greater Kelowna youth to have access to high level training and education. a year agoI was 29 when I got my first professional head coaching job. Imagine rolling up to day 1 of practice and on your roster is Carl English and Glen Big Baby Davis they are both older than you by over 7 years and have played in the best leagues globally. Was I nervous to fuck it up? Absolutely. Carl is one of the best Canadian international players of all time and was one of the coldest white boys on the planet. We were also in his hometown playing pro basketball where he was basketball Jesus. Then we sign Glen Davis who had won a championship with the Celtics coached by Doc Rivers and Tom Thibodeau and played along side the Boston Big 4 of KG, The Truth, Ray Allen and Rondo. Then there’s me. A guy who maxed out as a player but had never even coached one game at any level as a HC. I wanted to win and prove that I was the right hire so badly that I lost sense of what made me successful, my spirit. The work ethic is what gets you in the door. Without that you are dead on the operating table without a pulse or a chance but what makes coaches great versus good is the authentic ability and level of care with everyone’s: story, goals, idiosyncrasies, insecurities, Strengths, weakness and the ability to find the perfect level of humility but also β€˜don’t fuck with me’ that is true to who you are. I worked like a dog. Made a lot of mistakes I now know I would never do but never for lack of effort. At times I felt like I had to be a certain person because I was so young and inexperienced that it ended up costing me. What happened? The ownership had a decision to make - Glen or me. No brainer. I went home and licked my wounds. I thought I would never coach again. Then the phone rings. London. 5 years later I’ve had a pretty good run there and we’ve done special things. The main thing I learned? People don’t give a damn about how much you know, they care how much you care. Be unapologetically yourself. … and work like a MF behind the scenes to eliminate any weaknesses in your technical knowledge. And more important - to get real with yourself and get to a place of peace with your insecurities. Success is never linear. Failure is never fatal. Keep it moving.
