If you haven't heard of @piccalilli_nottingham, this new neighbourhood dining spot is local chef Dan Coles' first solo venture. Dan has put his culinary skills to good use in kitchens across the city (including at much-loved pubs @larwoodandvocepk & @thenelsonburtonjoyce) but Piccalilli sees him take the leap into pursuing his life-long ambition of opening his own restaurant.
The restaurant's main offering is a small plates based, a la carte menu, handily categorised into snacks, vegetables, fish, meat, dessert and cheese. I'm really looking forward to returning to Piccalilli to try some of the delicious dishes I've already spotted on the menu (specifically an intriguing hash brown and the cured salmon) but this review focuses on the lunch deal that launched last week.
We ended up being among the first customers to try 'The Workers Lunch', aptly named considering we both went on our lunch break from work. I saw the lunch deal launch on Instagram that morning, got a nagging craving for sausage and mash and decided to get my fix as soon as the restaurant opened for the day.
This lunch was just what I needed - it was the bangers and mash we all know and love, but elevated with expert flavours and restaurant-quality finish ✨ The potato was so creamy with the smoothest texture, while the @owentaylorbutchers sausage was a good size and tasted great. The onion jam that really made this meal though, adding a light sweetness to the dish. The portion is ideal for lunch - filling without leaving us stuffed!
We also ordered a side of @toughmarysbakehouse sourdough with marmite butter. I'm that rare breed of person that neither loves or hates marmite (I like it in small amounts) but the butter was beautifully moreish 🤤
I'll 100% be having this lunch again! You just can't beat sausage and mash for comfort food 👌🏻
