2 months agoThe Porsche 953 was developed for the 1984 Paris-Dakar Rally to conquer varied terrains. Based on the 911, the 953 featured modifications like an all-wheel-drive system, reinforced body, and larger tires, making it more suitable for the demands of the rally. It was powered by a 3.2-liter flat-six engine, delivering around 250 horsepower. Jacky Ickx, a Belgian racing driver with experience in multiple racing formats including F1, drove the Porsche 953 alongside co-driver Claude Brasseur in the 1984 rally.
The experience gained from the 953 contributed to the development of the Porsche 959, which made its debut in the 1986 Dakar Rally. The 959 featured significant advancements, including a more powerful 2.85-liter twin-turbo flat-six engine that produced around 450 horsepower. It also incorporated a sophisticated all-wheel-drive system with adjustable ride height. Driven by René Metge and co-driver Dominique Lemoyne, the 959 secured victory at the 1986 rally.
