10 months agoDid you notice how the perceived value of pregnancy is on a decline? Let me know your perspective below! . It's astonishing how pregnancy, often perceived as mundane due to women being "built" for it, actually entails such remarkable physiological challenges and risks. From the sizable wound left in the uterus post-delivery to the potential loss of nerve function leading to urinary issues after a C-section and even the possibility of broken ribs from fetal kicks, these realities underscore the incredible resilience and sacrifices women endure during pregnancy. The grave consequences, like amniotic fluid entering the bloodstream through a minor cut, serve as poignant reminders of the inherent dangers involved. Despite this, the portrayal of pregnancy as routine diminishes the extraordinary nature of this journey. It's vital to recognize and honor the superheroic feats of those who bear this burden, navigating its complexities with courage and strength. Let me know your thoughts below! . If you're interested in systemically improving your nutrition and lifestyle patterns to benefit your pregnancy, please send me a dm. It will be my pleasure to work with you! . 🏆 Optimizing Sleep for Elite Athletes 🌟 Helping you achieve peak performance through optimal sleep 👇 Learn more

2 months agoIf there’s one thing to take away from this World Series, it’s this… 💤⚾️ With the series kicking off in LA and headed east for Games 3 and 4 (and 5, if necessary), the Dodgers actually have a unique edge strictly from a sleep and travel standpoint. Here’s why: when east coast teams like the Yankees travel west, they are dealing with a 3-hour time zone change, crossing thousands of miles and shifting their body clocks. This jet lag can impact reaction time, physical performance, sleep, and recovery. Furthermore, a study of 20 MLB seasons showed that eastward travel decreases the winning percentage for the home team. The general rule of thumb is that it takes one day per time zone crossed for your body clock to resynchronize. That means if you’re traveling from the west coast to the east coast crossing 3 time zones, it will take your body clock 3 days to resynchronize. Both teams were in LA on Saturday and will be playing tonight in New York—an adjustment period of less than 2 days. The teams’ body clocks will need to resynchronize and consistent schedules will be helpful so big kudos to @MLB for keeping game times consistent at 8 p.m. EDT. 🕒 Yankees vs. Dodgers debate aside, if travel and sleep are any indicator, the data favors the Dodgers. Comment below who you think will take Games 3 and 4! 👇⚾️ —— Dr. Cheri D. 2 months agoHappy Homecoming @stanfordfootball! 🏈 As a proud alumna and an Adjunct Lecturer at @stanford, my connection to this incredible community has been a special cornerstone of my journey in sleep medicine. It all began in 2002 when I met Dr. William C. Dement—the father of modern sleep medicine—and helped conduct a sleep study examining the effects of paying back sleep debt. This experience sparked my fascination with sleep and curiosity to explore performance in athletes. Under the guidance and mentorship by Dr. Dement during my B.A.S. in Biological Sciences & Psychology and subsequent M.S. in Biological Sciences, I started to study the impact of sleep in elite athletes. Dr. Dement’s famous Sleep and Dreams class, which he began teaching in 1971, has taught and inspired thousands of students to explore the fascinating world of sleep science and its profound impact on our health and every day life. This course has been special to me starting when I first served as the Head TA from 2006-2008. After graduating from Sleep Medicine Fellowship at the Stanford Sleep Medicine Center in 2022, I started teaching as an Adjunct Lecturer for the class and of course carrying on unique class traditions—you still get bonus points for falling asleep in class! 🛌❤️ From Dr. Dement’s 80th birthday celebration with the Stanford Tree 🌲 to my work with Stanford Athletics, I have had so many unforgettable memories at Stanford which have undoubtedly contributed to shaping who I am today. I’m grateful for these experiences as well as the opportunity to carry on Dr. Dement’s legacy continuing to push the frontiers of sleep science every day! #Stanford #GoStanford #SleepMedicine #SleepScience #SportScience #SleepExpert #SleepResearch #PerformanceScience #MahMethod
